Ọkàn: A Journey Toward Sustainable Connection

Project Overview

In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, Ọkàn emerged as a platform designed to connect people with local, eco-conscious businesses. Inspired by the Yoruba word for 'heart' or 'mind,' Ọkàn reflects a deeper commitment—one that fosters not just transactions, but a community dedicated to sustainable living. As the sole UX and UI Designer, I guided this project from concept to research and design, creating a platform that emphasizes meaningful, user-centered experiences.

Context

The challenge was to build a platform that promotes sustainable choices while cultivating a supportive community. By focusing on intuitive design, we aimed to empower users to make informed, eco-friendly decisions in an engaging way.

Objective

My goal was to create an intuitive and immersive app that resonates with users' values, making sustainability a seamless part of their daily lives. Ọkàn was envisioned to be more than an app—it was to become a space where users could feel connected to a larger movement toward sustainability.

Reflections and Learnings

Developing Ọkàn was an insightful journey, filled with lessons that shaped my approach to design. From understanding the cultural significance of the name Ọkàn to identifying the emotional and practical needs of users, each step deepened my empathy and broadened my perspective.

Key insights highlighted the importance of community and education in sustainable living. Users not only sought eco-friendly products but also a supportive space for learning and connection. This reinforced the need for a product that addresses both the emotional and practical aspects of sustainable choices.

Key Reflections:

 • Aligning a project’s mission with cultural and emotional significance adds depth and purpose.
 • Empathy is essential in design—understanding the user's struggles and motivations is the first step to creating a meaningful solution.
 • A clear, well-defined objective serves as a guiding star, ensuring all decisions align with the project’s ultimate goal.

Research and Insights

The research phase was integral in uncovering user needs and motivations. Through interviews, community exploration, and competitor analysis, I gained valuable insights into the challenges and desires of potential users. These findings informed every step of the design process, ensuring that Ọkàn truly met the needs of its audience.

User Interviews: Through 11 in-depth interviews, I gained firsthand insights into users' struggles with sustainable choices and the emotional barriers they face. Key findings included:

 • Insight: Many users felt overwhelmed by the abundance of information and lacked guidance in making eco-friendly decisions.
 • Reaction: This led to the development of educational content and streamlined navigation to simplify decision-making.

Online Forums and Groups: Exploring online spaces, such as Reddit and Facebook groups, allowed me to understand how users navigate sustainability in their daily lives. The consistent desire for community and shared experiences became a pivotal focus.

 • Insight: Users expressed a need for connection and support, highlighting the importance of building a strong community within the app.
 • Reaction
: This inspired the integration of forums, event platforms, and user profiles to foster engagement and shared learning.

Competitor Analysis: Conducting a comprehensive competitor analysis helped identify gaps and opportunities for innovation, ensuring Ọkàn stood out in the market.

 • Insight: Existing apps were either too niche or lacked comprehensive features.
 • Reaction
: This inspired us to create an all-in-one platform that combined shopping, education, and community.

Reflections and Learnings

This meticulous research phase was akin to detective work, revealing diverse motivations behind sustainable living and common user hurdles. It emphasized the critical importance of empathy and active listening in truly understanding and meeting user needs. Research is not just about data collection; it's about immersing oneself in the user's world to gain deep insights.

Unearthing User Insights

As the layers of user insights began to unravel, Ọkàn’s direction became clearer:

Educational Gap: Many interviewees highlighted a lack of clarity about sustainable practices, underscoring the necessity for educational content within the app. Users were eager to learn but needed guidance.

Desire for Community: A strong desire for a supportive community of like-minded individuals emerged, revealing the need to foster connection and shared learning. Users wanted to feel part of a larger movement.

Diverse Motivations: The interviews also unveiled varied motivations for embracing sustainability, ranging from personal health benefits to environmental concerns and a sense of community contribution. This diversity needed to be reflected in the app’s content and features.

Reflections and Learnings

Each insight was more than a piece of the puzzle; it was a profound revelation that shaped the app's design strategy. This phase illuminated the balance needed between addressing educational needs and building a vibrant community, reflecting the varied motivations driving sustainable living. Understanding these insights reaffirmed that a successful product must cater to both the practical and emotional needs of users.

Crafting Personas and Mapping Journeys

With insights in hand, I developed detailed personas and customer journey maps that depicted the real-life experiences of our users. This helped in visualizing the touchpoints where Ọkàn could offer meaningful support.

Persona Examples:

Reflections and Learnings

Crafting these personas and journey maps provided a clear, insightful path to truly understand user interactions and how best to engage them at every touchpoint. This mapping emphasized that success comes from addressing both emotional and functional aspects of sustainable living, ensuring that users feel heard and supported. It also emphasized the need for empathy in design—truly understanding users' lives and challenges leads to more meaningful solutions.

From Concept to Creation

The journey from idea to execution was iterative, blending creativity with precision. Each stage, from initial sketches to high-fidelity prototypes, was guided by continuous feedback, ensuring that the final product was not only visually appealing but also highly functional.

Reflections and Learnings

Bringing these ideas to life was an iterative process, guided by simplicity and usability. This phase showcased the importance of starting with basic sketches and gradually evolving the design based on continuous feedback. The journey from concept to creation was about building a bridge between sustainable living and the user’s daily experience. It demonstrated that simplicity in design often leads to the most elegant and effective solutions.

Designing the Interface

Designing Ọkàn’s interface required attention to detail and a commitment to accessibility. The visual design needed to balance aesthetics with usability, offering a seamless experience for all users.

Color Palette and Typography: The color palette was chosen to evoke a sense of calm and trust, with greens and blues symbolizing nature and sustainability. Typography was selected for readability and a modern aesthetic, ensuring text was easy to read across different devices.

Accessibility Standards: Ensuring the app was accessible to all users was a priority. This involved:

 • Using high-contrast colors for better visibility.
 • Including alternative text for images to support screen readers.
 • Designing with touch targets large enough for easy navigation on mobile devices.

Readability: The layout and spacing were meticulously designed to enhance readability. Key information was placed prominently, and content was broken down into digestible sections to avoid overwhelming the user.

Reflections and Learnings

The design phase emphasized the importance of accessibility and readability in creating an inclusive user experience. Every design choice was made with the user in mind, aiming to create an interface that was not only beautiful but also functional and easy to use. This phase reaffirmed that good design is about making the user feel considered and cared for.
